Packaging

I think the role of packaging is a very intriguing debate for a number of reasons, when buying/shopping do you buy a product for it's quality, it's function, it's aesthetics, it's price or maybe simply how it's packaged?

What is the role of packaging?

I think the role of packaging simply ties down to how a brand or company wants to express themselves and more so now how they stand out from what's already there, how do they become a product or brand that isn't left behind on the shelf or on in the aisle. By looking "good" on the outside and creating an anticipation for themselves and or their product I think the role of packaging is hugely significant when a product wants to advertise itself and differentiate themselves from the market competition.

However an underlying issue I believe as consumers of these everyday products, is what do we do with the packaging once the product has served it's use? Take a Heinz can of baked beans for example, once the food item has been consumed I personally don't see the need to keep the tin can, so in this case why is the packaging such the difference here if a product is offering the same thing. For example I personally prefer the baked beans at Lidl, and that is not down to it's packaging at all but due to it's taste however once consumed I too throw the tin can away. I guess what I'm trying to highlight here is that the role of packaging is the opportunity for consumers to be part of a brand, or part of a story because they have bought based on how it looks and perhaps not it's function.

Who do you consider to be a good packaging designer?

A good packaging designer allows for sustainability, can allow for the packaging itself to be useable and resuable or perhaps somehow integrated into the product but also making it look good, unique and something of real quality inside. I think the consideration for continual usage of packaging is not only resourceful but it is also quite clever.  An example of good packaging for me is the protein powder shakes that a lot of gym members use, they can be refilled. In terms of looks you could argue it's not all that attractive as a design however not only is it designed to stand on it's own but there is strength in the bags. Being sealed not allowing the products contents to mix with the air, light or vapor etc. Stand up pouches are flexible meaning they can be stored almost anywhere, are easy to carry, are puncture resistant (due to the several layers of scientifically formulated film that have been laminated together), and are environmentally friendly.

What is all the fuss about carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is determined by the total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly aid our human activities which are usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). A certain amount of CO2 is created when the engine burns when driving a car which is also dependent on the distance and fuel consumption. CO2 is also generated from heating your house with coal, oil or gas, even if the house is heated with electricity the electrical power may also have emitted a certain amount of CO2. Basically our carbon footprints is the total amount of all emissions of CO2 which are induced by our activities within a given time frame, and our carbon footprints are usually calculated for the time period of a year. In order to protect the planet we live on, it is important that we as humans are mindful of our activities that induce all these emissions of CO2 if we can reduce our carbon footprints who knows what the future will hold in terms of our resources and the climate.

What is green packaging?

Green packaging also known as sustainable packaging is the use of manufacturing methods and materials for the packaging of goods that aims to have a low impact on energy consumption and  the environment. Green packaging in other words uses environmentally sensitive methods, this includes biodegradable materials, recycling, energy efficiency, resuability and much more.

The measure of how important sustainable packaging is on our environment and to us as humans are enormous. A huge amount of energy is used in the production of traditional packaging such as, plastic bags, plastics, corrugated boxes and other several other forms of packaging. Frequently the source of that energy is fossil fuels that tend to add upon millions of metric tons of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere per year, while conventional packaging is discarded therefore as a result, ends up in oceans or landfills causing water, soil and plant contamination. However by using green packaging, consumers and manufacturers can dispose of these harmful contaminants that are destroying the atmosphere water and soil of our planet. This can be practiced via the use of biodegradable packaging, lowering packaging content and instead using alternative energy means such as solar, wind and biofuels in the production and physical transport of the packaging. Green packaging is designed to be Eco friendly.
