Our task in lecture was to bring in 16 typefaces, we had to collect them from magazines, printouts, newspapers or anything of the like and then break them down into categories of four as seen below:
- Sanserif Rational
- Sanserif Emotional
- Serif Rational
- Serif Emotional
Once we had the typefaces in those categories, we had to lay them out in a positioning chart and place the typefaces where we thought they belonged in line with the each other, an example of this can be seen below.
Before we started setting out the typefaces, we had formed groups of 2-4
to make the selection process more engaging and thought provoking. I
felt this was a good way to test the response from the typefaces as a
class/group, because (though some were similar) we had all brought in
different typefaces.
We had found that there wasn't really a right or wrong answer in our placements of the typefaces, it was an opportunity for us to gauge what we felt the typefaces were conveying to us and also how we interpreted them. As you can see the rational serif, was the category most used by out selected typefaces we had placed a total of 14 typefaces there, rational sanserif following with 12, followed next by sanserif emotional with 11 and lastly serif emotional with nine.
