Naming a Creative Business

In today's lecture we focused on the topic naming a creative business, this included everything from choosing the right name for your business, to limited company names, sole trader and partnership names, sensitive words and expressions that could mislead or give off the wrong impression regarding your business, displaying your business name, to getting the name live and working on the web.

At the end of the day the first impressions always count, so immediately you wouldn't want to deter anyone from just the business name so it is crucial to get this right from the start. Avoid using phrases that will date, think about the future. Your business name should work well wherever you use it, be it on the phone, as a logo, signs, stationery, advertisements and websites. The name is the foundation of the brand, so an innovative approach is needed for the name to also work as a memorable brand, think of Coca-Cola, Moving Brands, McDonald's, Pentagram, Microsoft, Grafik, Apple, Samsung, Google, and Frost Design for example. These were just the first set of names that came to my head (although not all our creative businesse names) but then I suppose that is exactly how the names were intended to work right? By me remembering them even though not being specifically close to any of them in particular...maybe expect for Microsoft and Google.

Having discussed the ideas and issues of naming a creative business we then got into groups of two and began a workshop between ourselves of coming up with creative business names. Peter our lecturer, gave one member (of each group) a random word and from that word we would go round in our groups, one after the other and say the first word that came to our minds directly related to the word before it and write it down. Ideally there was no wrong answer. Lets just say we started off with the word alien and ended up with the word chewing gum! Once we had written the words down we had a large pile of our random words on the able, and our next step with the list of words was to create a list of names that could be a design groups name and a music groups name. Then from those list of names to pick our favorite three for each category.

Below is an images of both design groups and music names:

Our three favourite names for design groups were:

Pencil Tourism, Alive Ink and Bamboo Prints.

Our three favourite names for music groups were:

Power Waves, Space Battle and Ancient Memories.

Doing this helped us shape our thoughts into what could work well as a design group and music group and really there were no wrong answers as that could limit our possibilities. Although we believed some names we came up with actually overlapped and could stand as both a music group and design group but overall it was a fun exercise to participate in, I found it very useful and helpful.
