Mat Maitland

Who is he? - Mat Maitland is an English visual artist and art director.

What does he do? - Mat is a visual artist, art director and image maker he produces surrealist work for a number of music artists and groups for example: he has worked on album art for Basement Jaxx, Snow Patrol and Michael Jackson to name a few. His style merges and explores pop culture, fashion and art.

How did you find him? - I was recently interested in finding out who created Michael Jackson's latest posthumous album art 'Xscape' and it was then I discovered the visual style of Mat Maitland and have ever since been intrigued by his vision and a fan of his work.

Why do you like him? - There is an element of Salvador Dali in his expressive surrealist work which focuses on music design, I thoroughly enjoy looking at his work and love his exploration and execution of a pop expressive nature style.

In no particular order, my choice of design groups/agencies are:
  1. Interbrand
  2. NB Studios
  3. Moving Brands
  4. Squawka
  5. Anthem Worldwide
  6. FutureProof

NB Studios

Who are they? - NB Studios are an award winning multi-disciplinary branding and communications studio.

What do they do? - NB Studios have a diverse client base as well as their work they cover both public and private sectors in retail, the arts and property sectors they have a wide range of disciplines.

How did you find them? - In a book called 'Design Th!nking' by Gavin Ambrose & Paul Harris.

Why do you like them? - In the book previously mentioned, I came across a piece of branding work that originally got me interested the company. Their client (at the time of discovery) was INSEAD. I saw this piece of work and was immediately drawn to it. What I was most affected by was in actual fact a map of the world formed by leaves, I felt there was a calculated connection between the choice of a leaf and the world, symbolizing a process and the output of gathering information on a global scale and I remember just thinking wow, what depth! Upon further research I had found they work with clients in the UK and around the world to add to their repertoire and have specialties in branding, digital, campaigns and packaging which have seen them win a number awards.
